The Cardinal Review: Bee Movie Bee Movie

" Its cute, clever, and is a wonderful children’s film with a good message about everything in nature having its place and role. "

"In this blend of intentional and inadvertent it does not matter what the plot is, but the journey that we are taken on is marvel enough to just relax and enjoy with some sweet lime."
The Cardinal Review: Lions for Lambs

"Amidst a handful of wartime exposés, Redford’s Lion’s for Lambs takes a break from the conventional romanticized war story or one-sided criticism and merely encourages a critical analysis of political motives."
The Cardinal Review: Lust, Caution

"At almost three hours, Ang Lee’s NC-17 WWII epic of lust and betrayal requires a fair amount of coffee and focus to really parse out the magnificent underpinnings."
The Cardinal Review: Michael Clayton Michael Clayton
by Stephen Goetz

"Gilroy and company aren’t exactly remaking the wheel with this lawyer thriller, but the wheel they’ve made looks pretty damn good compared to what came before."

THE WEEKLY RANT

November 9, 2007

Happy Trite Holiday Film Birthday Steve!

And what a gift! Fred Claus opening! Who could be more lucky? Vince Vaughn sass, elf hijinks, Paul Giamatii as Santa, what's not to love?!?! Happy Birthday Steve! The film gods have surely blessed you and given you the opportunity to ring in another year of life by wasting 116 minutes in a cliched, holiday haze.

But in case you do not want to submit yourself to that level of nausea, there are a slew of good films out there. Sadly, most of them are already out and this weekend only going to add to the dreck that you could possibly sit though. Last week, though, we missed reporting on the biggest opening of the Fall with Ridley Scott's American Gangster and Seinfeld's Bee Movie competing for Box Office profits. But we are now going to make up for that by not only covering those films, but we have a special exclusive sneak peak at the newest Robert Redford film: Lions for Lambs.

The Cardinal Review guest writer Andrew Collier was able to make it to the Gala Premier of Redford's film this Wednesday in DC and has brought us exclusive coverage from the event, including this interview with Tom Cruise:

TCR: Hi
Tom Cruise: Hi

While we will plan to bring more depth to our interviewing in the future, this is a wonderful first start for The Cardinal Review as we have finally breached the Red Carpet (or I guess in this case, hanging around by the stage door). We hope that this is the first of many insightful celebrity and director interviews we will be bringing to the site, but while we work on filling out that department - make sure to check out the review for what will be this weekend's hit.

In other important news, I was wandering around the movie theater this past week while I was waiting to see the uber-hyped Bee Movie and found myself drawn to the production posters lining the corridor. While most of the posters were clever ways to distill the film into one image or tricks to evoke the most emotion out of you (and I must say that Walk Hard invoked the urge to vomit...) there is one poster that stands miles ahead of the others in terms of creating a sense of energy and raw excitement for a film that I honestly am quite luke-warm about. What Would NPH Do? and where did he get a Unicorn? Honestly, I cannot think of much more that could entice me to see a movie. I mean, its Doogie...on a unicorn! So even though I was caught wondering what the idea was behind the new Will Farrell afro-tennis film is all about and really curious to see if Iron Man really is what the trailer hinted it might be (2 hours of watching a CGI robot fly around), Harold and Kumar are back on my radar.

We would also like to annouce the first winner of our Quirk Quiz: Shandi Foulger. As you may know, we have struck up a partnership of sorts with Quirk Books Press and are offering an opportunity to win a free book each week. Last week we had a still from the classic Cohen Brothers film The Big Lebowski. The scene in question involved The Dude blowing on the toes of one miss Bunny Lebowski. Congratuations to the others who got this answer correct! Make sure you check out our question this week, a nod to Seinfeld's return in Bee Movie.

Make sure to check out all of our reviews this week which range from the political thriller Michael Clayton to Ang Lee's careful and masterful Lust, Caution to the wacky, stylized work of Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited. Next week we will be picking back up with our marathon The Greatest Film Ever Made? which looks at the four films touted to be the greatest with Renoir's The Rules of the Game.

Till next week ,
~Chris
