The Cardinal Review's Pick of the Week

NEW THIS WEEK

All About Eve
by Christopher Collier

"...Eve’s simple story of deception and the cost paid in the rise to greatness belies a deeper morality, one that questions the sanctity of art and the pedestaled figures which we pay to worship under the lights."

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
by Stephen Goetz

"Like Columbus' Potter films, the main story is told, but in a workmanlike unstylistic fashion."

by Christopher Collier

"With Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, something finally clicked."

Some Like It Hot
by Kevin Feather

"Though it was after my fourth viewing that I wrote this review, I still sat in front of the television, completely captivated, barely noticing the two hour passing by me."

Sunshine
by Christopher Collier

"...it takes a great talent like Boyle to make a flawed film sparkle and pulse the way he has done with Sunshine."

Crossdressing Wizards Reignite the Sun!

Phew! It has been a crazy two weeks and I am sorry that these reviews have taken so long to get to you. I know that we are behind the ball now and need to get back into things, so check in soon with our review of The Simpsons: The Movie, which we will have up this upcoming week. Even though the review is a week off, I would strongly recommend catching Simpsons while it is out. Not only does it look fantastic on the big screen (catch it in DLP if you can), but it is hysterical and manages to cook at a great pace the whole 87 minutes withough getting dull. The John Wayne Marathon has also taken a little siesta, but will be back next week with a review of John Ford's classic Stagecoach.

But within that extra time away, we do have some awesome new stuff to report. Firstly, we have an all new poll question set up, which will allow you to check in daily to see which is getting the most votes. So - make sure to vote for your favorite! Also, I am really happy to announce the start, FINALLY, of our message board - the Cardinal Review Forum (if you can come up with a more exciting name - please e-mail us or post something...) Now you can chime in with your thoughts on movies and our reviews. Disagree with us? Think our review is spot on? Wish we were watching more chic flics? (I will be reviewing Jane Austin's Persuasion next week for all those who feel that way btw....) Now you can let us know what you think.

So with all the news out of the way, I would like to draw attention to the collection of reviews we have this week. We have two very different reviews of the newest in the Harry Potter series as Steve found the film flat and "workman like" and I thought it was the best one so far. Have you seen the film? So far I have found that some loved it and some hated it. Please drop us a line on the new message boards. We also have a review of Danny Boyle's newest: Sunshine. A brilliant film with a minor plot flaw, this film about a crew headed to re-ignite the sun with a nuclear payload may just be the best science fiction film to be released in the past five years.

We also have two new reviews for the Film Academy. Kevin wieghs in on one of his favorite all time films, Billy Wilder's screwball masterpiece Some Like it Hot. I also had the luck to catch the classic All About Eve on the big screen as part of the Ambler Theater's Hollywood Summer Nights. For those of you in the Philadelphia area, make sure to check out the Ambler Theater, which is not only showing the best independant films out right now, but also bringing classics back to the big screen. (Feel free to say hi while picking up your popcorn...) Eve is a classic that unites Bette Davis and Anne Baxter in a power struggle over a Broadway career. If you have not seen it, you should definately check it out.

Well, that brings us to one more change on the site. Our "Pick of the Week" is no longer a film that we have not seen and cannot over accurate advice on, but a film that we either revisited or happened to catch and want to point out to you. This week Kevin and I finally took Steve's advice and caught Craig Brewer's Black Snake Moan. A briliant personification of the Blues through the friendship between a sex-crazed 20-something and an aging Blues musician, the music in this film above all should not be missed.

With the pick changed, we now have a section which lists the upcoming releases this week. We will highlight the one we are most looking forward to, which this week is the third Bourne film, The Bourne Ultimatum. We were leaning towards Bratz, but in the end Matt Damon won out... Depending on how much of my paycheck I want to sink into the booze fund, I may just catch Bratz though....

~Chris

Last Week´s Poll Question

Following the opening of Transformers we asked Michael Bay's Transformers: A welcome return to the Autobots or the 1986 movie is the only true big screen version?and here’s what you answered:

Both results that we recieved this week expressed outrage at the new film. Justin commented that "I haven't seen the new Transformers... but it is Michael Bay. It is blasphemy... BLASPHEMY. Michael Bay must be eliminated." We were also once again gifted with having a definative voice weigh in with his opinion: Megatron wrote "What is with you people!?!? I was happy, retired from the life as the leader of the Decepticons and now this...another god damn movie. Who the hell does this Michael Bay guy think he is anyway? Could he not find an original freakin' script? The real problem is that people are so gay for the Transformers now...its like the 80's minus the blow. The one thing that really jabs my ass is the fact that they have us selling Chevys through the whole movie like a bunch of washed up used car salesmen. We all know I'm a Ford man myself...so you all can go an F@$K yourselves!!"
